Just a list of online software you might use to get some kind of publishing system up and running quickly.

I need a social network thingy where people can gather to chat and stuff…
Create a Ning
Start a group in Facebook
Make a group in Google Groups

I need a blog, nothing fancy, but I must be able to show videos and stuff in it…
Ahh… You seek tumblr
Or for a more professional look, Blogger

I need a website. Not sure exactly what. Maybe only one page for now…
Try the very easy to use Google Pages (my test)
Or, just make one entry on a tumblr blog like Russell did

I need to collaborate on a piece of writing with colleagues…
It has to be Google Documents for professional documents or…
Google Notepad for lists and to-do’s and umm notes

I need to share a long list of links with people…
Let me introduce you to my best friend del.icio.us

I need to be able to tell people where I am and what I’m doing with no obligation to hook up:
You want need twitter. (Lord, forgive me)

Have you seen claimID?

claimid.png

claimID is one of many new web services that help you to manage your identity and reputation online. Many people have flickrs, blogs, myspaces and the like, but don’t have anywhere to collect all their links in one space under their name. claimID enables you to do this without having to build your own website. Think of it as your own personal space on the web that you can direct people to for them to get the whole picture of you rather than just fragments found through searching Google.

In addition to hosting your online identity, claimID can provide you with a single-login for ALL your web spaces. Well, not quite yet. The openID system is in place and waiting for websites to adopt it as their logins. You can expect the take up of this to be huge once a big websites support it. This single-login is a godsend to people who forget their usernames and passwords.

Here’s what a login looks like for Sally Webster - Username = http://claimid.com/sallywebster Password = mydaydateofbirth

Another trick claimID can do is verifying your links. This means is you can make firm associations between your links your claimID which becomes your trusted online identity provider as you add more links(!) It’s like rubber stamping your links to say, “Yes, this MySpace page is me and not that other Sally Webster.” This is important for helping people distinguish between many people named with the same name, especially as people increasingly use Google searches to find out information about you.

So, you like the sound of claimID? The sign up is very simple, but before you rush off I’d like to show you an alternative, or more likely an additional option: Ziki

ziki.png

Ziki does much the same thing as claimID but it’s a bit more lively. What Ziki does well is show people feeds of your updated content on websites, rather than just a list of links to those sites. Ziki pulls in RSS feeds of your latest blog posts, latest flickr photos, youtube videos, etc. Essentially Ziki is a great showing off tool for bloggers and people who add a lot of content to the web.

The other thing Ziki does that claimID doesn’t is promote your Ziki profile on search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. When people search on your name it appears as the top entry in a list of results. By using claimID and Ziki you’ve got the opportunity to tell your side of YOUR STORY perhaps before people find those debauched photos of you on drunken night out on some old website. Of course you may want people to see these photos, they may be a key moment that expresses who you are. That’s what claimID and Ziki are designed for: to structure your information according to your own whimsy. Think of them as Life CVs.

How things change.

Just a quick brain dump of interesting new approaches to marketing and collaboration:

Adhoc professional networks encouraging collaboration outside agency walls. (Do you need to work at an agency?)

Naked NY shuns the single-voiced corporate blog in favour of an aggregate of individual employee blogs. (Do you need a company ‘voice’?)
